Deciding to take your very first piano lesson is an exciting step, but it often comes with a few nerves. You might worry about whether it’s too late to start, if you’ll be able to make progress,or if you’ll feel overwhelmed. At Digital Music Tutors, we believe the first step should be the most enjoyable one.
Our research led approach is specifically designed to be patient, engaging, and entirely stress-free. We don’t just teach you notes; we ensure you feel comfortable and supported from the moment you sit down at your keyboard. Furthermore, we use a range of technology to allow you to progress more quickly outside of our usual lessons.
In this guide, we’ll explain exactly what happens during those first 30 minutes, and how we set you up to achieve your musical goals.
The Technical Setup
After booking your class, you should have a good understanding of how to achieve the best setup. Any finer details will be addressed in the first part of our consultation, this will help you position your camera so I can see your hands, posture, and keys clearly. Whether you are using a tablet, laptop, or smartphone, we ensure the connection is stable (And give recommendations if necessary) so the focus remains entirely on the music.
Discussing Your Musical Identity
Every student is unique, some might think that is a challenge to be overcome but instead it is the key to your development. During your first piano lesson, we discuss your goals, how you learn, the time you have available, your past experience etc. In doing so, we develop a picture of your musical identity we can then begin to develop a Personalised Curriculum that keeps you motivated. We also introduce our Learning Management System (LMS) that will support your practice between our live sessions – Here you will find appropriately differentiated resources whether it’s your very first piano lesson, or you’re already quite experienced.
Playing Your First Notes
Even as a complete beginner you will be playing something recognisable to you within the first 20 minutes. We start with simple patterns that help you understand the geography of the keyboard and move on correct posture and finger placement. Establishing this solid foundation is essential to your success, and our 100% pass rate confirms that our approach works well!
